Why DIY face masks when you can go buy a face mask?
I worked for skincare and makeup retail for YEARS and was lucky enough to be exposed to and even gifted lots of fancy at home masks to try out. Plenty of them gave great results and made for a lovely self care night. After getting my esthetics license I was able to get my hands on a few clinical skincare masks to do at home and while these were amazing they were pretty expensive without the right hook up. While the retail and clinical masks had differences as far as potency and ingredients, where they tended to be similar was the price tag. Obviously there’s a wide range of prices as far as these masks go but trying to find a cost effective one that actually worked AND had clean ingredients felt like finding a needle in a haystack. So then what’s the next best alternative? Going to an esthetician! While this is a great option for making sure the money you’re putting into your skin treatments is actually giving you results, in this day and age it can be hard to afford regular treatments and the truth of the matter is: you still need to keep up on treatments at home to get the results you want.
So when do you buy an already formulated mask vs. making one at home? That depends on what you’re trying to target and what you want from your face mask experience and results!
Benefits of making your own face mask:
- Having control of the ingredients you add and the quality of them
- No Preservatives
- Cost effective
- Customization
Benefits of retail or clinical mask:
- Ready to go, no extra work!
- Specific targeted treatment
- Cute packaging that can make you feel all warm and fuzzy and cute too
After leaving retail and not being affiliated with a clinical skincare brand I was left to purchasing any skincare I needed myself, I know boohoo for me. Once that was the case it really sunk in how expensive everything was for the results I was getting, and in this economy I wasn’t thrilled with that! So recently I re-read ‘The French Beauty Solution‘ and had my eyes re-opened to simplifying my skincare and even making some of it myself at home! This book is an excellent source for at home beauty treatments and I think it even had a recipe of a face mask similar to this one, but reading the book mostly inspired me to start tinkering with at home masks myself!
2 magical ingredients for your skin: Greek Yoghurt & Raw Honey
This is in general one of my favorite at home combos but recently I was on a girls trip somewhere with a high elevation and I was so busy getting ready for said trip I forgot to apply my favorite face sunscreen that morning! Which almost never happens, but of course things get forgotten when you’re rushing. Anyways, by the end of the day my face was pretty pink and warm to the touch. Luckily, as a true esthi would do, I had packed a Dr. Jart sheet mask which I had applied to hydrate and soothe but to be on the safe side when I got home the next day I put this honey and greek yoghurt mask on to my still extra sensitive skin.
Topical benefits of Greek Yoghurt:
- Hydrating and soothing (why I used it on my sun sensitive skin): greek yoghurt is full of healthy proteins and fats that help it hydrate and soothe skin
- Lactic Acid: gently exfoliates which leaves skin glowing
- Probiotics: the probiotics in greek yoghurt help calm skin inflammation and support a balanced skin microbiome
Topical benefits of Raw Honey:
- Hydrating: honey is a natural humectant meaning it helps bind moisture to the skin keeping it soft and hydrating
- Acne fighting: honey is naturally anti-bacterial which can help combat acne-causing bacteria resulting in less breakouts
- Healing: honey naturally promotes healing which can help with acne, acne scars, other scars or pigmentation over time
- Gentle Glow enhancer: honey has enzymes and antioxidants which help gently exfoliate and helps your skin glow
Combined, Raw Honey & Greek Yoghurt:
- Gently exfoliate but balanced, leaving your skin glowing but not stripped of too many natural oils
- Hydrated and soothed, perfect for irritated, sensitve, dry or acne prone skin
Notes:
- In the recipe I recommend organic greek yoghurt, but to make it more cost effective you don’t have to go organic. Plus, if you already have just regular greek yoghurt on hand then use that! No need to go out and buy another yoghurt if you already have one.
- I also recommend raw honey over regular, but same thing, if you already have regular honey on hand that’s fine to use
- You can customize this mask! I looked, and ‘The French Beauty Solution‘ has half and avocado added to their yoghurt/honey face mask. You can also add blended oats for a little extra gentle exfoliation, etc
