Jump to RecipeWhy are Detox Juices so popular?
Detox juices are a great way to flush your system (your liver, kidneys, gut) and help reset your body. They also nourish your body with all the vitamins and minerals that your ingredients contain giving your body lots of added benefits! And aside from the possible difficulty of cleaning your juicer, its an easy way to detox!
I got the idea for this particular juice recipe after a week of traveling across the country and back. My trip was amazing and so much fun but you know what I indulged in while on it? EVERYTHING. I indulged in alcohol, sugar, caffeine, fried foods, etc. I regret none of it. I had an amazing time and the indulging was worth it.
However, after all the said indulging, I felt sluggish and quite honestly yucky. The traveling and the lack of sleep from the traveling didn’t help anything. So I started to think up ways to detox after traveling and came up with this juice recipe.
Benefits of detox juicing:
- Supports digestion and liver health (your liver is what helps clear toxins from your body)
- Floods your body with vitamins and minerals
- Boosts hydration (much needed after caffeine, alcohol, sugar and travel)
Detox Juice Ingredients
What should you look for when grabbing your produce for your juice? I personally try to grab organic when I’m able to avoid adding any pesticides or whatever else to my juice. But if that isn’t available to you or it’s too expensive the other thing you want to look for when you’re picking your produce is peak ripeness to get the most out of your nutrients.
Whether organic or not I still always recommend washing your produce with a good vegetable wash especially if you don’t have to peel your produce before juicing.
- Cucumber
- Kale
- Apple
- Pear
- Lemon
- Beets
- Pineapple
- Ginger
What exactly does each ingredient do?
Cucumber: Mild detoxifier as well as hydrating
Kale: Leafy green, detoxifying
Apple & Pear: Great source of fiber and vitamins, and honestly added to help sweeten and offset the taste of kale
Lemon: Great source of vitamin C (helps boost collagen too!), detoxifying
Beets: Detoxifying especially for your liver (needed after alcohol)
Pineapple: Full of enzymes to help with digestion, also to help with sweetness
Ginger: Aids digestion and anti-inflammatory (caffeine, sugar, alcohol, fried foods can inflame your body)
While all these ingredients work together to help detoxify your body, they also will work together to give you healthy glowing skin! Two birds one stone, or juice.
Possible swaps or add in’s:
Leafy greens– I highly encourage you to have at least one leafy green for best detoxification. The recipe calls for Kale but you can also swap or add in: swiss chard, arugula and/or spinach
Citrus– Citrus helps detoxify but its also high in vitamin C which is an anti-oxidant that will help support your cells while your body is detoxing. The recipe calls for lemon but you could add/swap for: Grapefruit, lime or oranges
Anti-inflammatory– The recipe calls for ginger, I feel like it goes well with the flavor combination, however you could add/swap in turmeric. It would make the juice more orange add a different sort of spice to it, but turmeric is a powerhouse ingredient for inflammation
Herbs– I actually don’t have any herbs in this particular recipe, they just didn’t call to me while I was thinking it up. However you could always add some parsley or some fennel. Both are great for your skin and digestion and parsley also is a detoxifier.
Water foods– The recipe calls for cucumber because its light and cooling as well as its other benefits, but you could add/swap for celery. Celery is mostly water so it’s very hydrating and also a detoxifier.
Prep & Tools
Depending on your juicer or how you go about your juice you may need to prep your produce differently. Like I said above, I always recommend washing your produce with a good wash that’s made for it just to be safe, but especially if you aren’t thoroughly peeling your produce first. If you are peeling your produce make sure you’re thorough and use a good sharp peeler to ensure your juicer doesn’t get clogged.
My particular juicer does work best if the produce is peeled well. Plus if your juicer is getting clogged and gummed up it could slow down the juicing process and make cleaning it even more difficult.
Storage & Tips
If you don’t plan on drinking all of the juice right away it is best to store your juice in a glass jar with an airtight lid. I personally like using a good old fashioned mason jar for storage (that’s pretty obvious from the recipe picture right?). Plus you can just take the lid off and ice if you’d like and boom! Your drink is ready.
Sometimes I like to turn my juice into “shots” and take them throughout the day. What can I say, it just feels less daunting if I’m not in a health juice mood. For the shots I like to have them pre portioned out in these cute little jars so they are just ready to go in the fridge.
Something I love to do if I’m already spending the time making something, is doubling or tripling the recipe! If I’m already doing it, why not make some for later right? So I’ll make a big batch and then usually freeze some for later. To do that I either just use my handy mason jars or souper cubes! If you don’t have these yet, they are a GAME CHANGER for food prep!
When is the best time to drink your detox juice?
Ideally if you can drink your juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach that’s best case scenario. It helps kickstart your digestion and metabolism. As someone that reaches for coffee as soon as I peel my eyes open, I understand if that doesn’t best fit into your routine. Another great option is later in the afternoon while you start to hit that afternoon slump. The hydration and minerals will help for an afternoon pick me up!
I’m a little extra and always looking for a way to habit stack and combine things in my routine. So if I’m having my juice in the afternoon I’ll also turn it into an adrenal cocktail. I’ll cut the juice with some coconut water and add some sea salt and possibly some extra lemon or lime.
If you need an adrenal cocktail recipe, this is one of my favorites that I’ve made.
Easy Detox Juice for Energy, Digestion, and Glowing Skin
Cuisine: JuiceDifficulty: Easy2
servings30
minutesThis vibrant detox juice blends cucumber, apple, pear, pineapple, beets, ginger, and lemon into a refreshing boost of antioxidants and natural energy. It’s hydrating, gently cleansing, and perfect for fighting fatigue, supporting digestion, and giving your body a nourishing reset
Ingredients
1 Large Cucumber
1 Pineapple
2 Lemons
2 Pears
2 Apples of choice (I used Cosmic Crisp)
2-3 Small/Medium Beets
1 Medium Size piece of Ginger
2 Cups of Kale
Directions
- Prep your produce: Peel pears, apples, ginger, and cucumber. Scoop seeds out of cucumber if your juicer is easily clogged. Cut outside rind off of lemons and pineapple. Wash kale and cut leafy parts off to use. If you have a powerful juicer and can leave them on the stalk then go ahead and do so.
- After produce is peeled and prepped, cut into pieces that will fit easily into your juicer. Make sure especially with the ginger that the fibers will not clog your juicer by cutting it into small enough pieces.
- Ensure your juicer is set up appropriately depending on which model you have and that there is an apparatus to catch the juice.
- Start slowly adding in your produce to the juicer and start the juicing process. Gauge how much produce your juicer can take at once and adjust how much you’re putting in accordingly.
- Once all the produce is run through the juicer, pour over ice and enjoy!
