First off, I’m so excited for you to read about and try this new smoothie recipe I dreamed up! My family drinks a lot of smoothies; I have little kids so they love helping me make them and I find them to be an easy way to get picky kids to consume nutrients. So recently when I went on a post-travel detox journey I created this recipe as well as a juice recipe.

In this recipe you’ll find wonderful detox ingredients as well as hidden veggies! Which I’m extremely proud of. Yet, even with the hidden veggies and detox qualities this smoothie is sweet, creamy, and honestly so easy.

What’s the difference between a Detox Juice and a Detox Smoothie?

While both are extremely beneficial and pack a punch as far as detoxing goes, they are different. A detox juice floods your body with concentrated nutrients and hydration. A detox smoothie also has nutrients and hydration but it’s also more satiating and can contain more protein and fiber.

This has quickly become an easy breakfast option for me lately. Not that I ever encourage a “breakfast replacement”, but if you’re like me at all and can’t eat a full meal first thing in the morning but have to run out of the house it is a great breakfast alternative. I’ll cover it soon but you can easily add things to this smoothie to make it more hearty and protein packed. But to begin with, it has two vegetables, protein from the greek yoghurt and possibly from whatever liquid you use, as well as potassium and antioxidants from the fruit. And I really need to drive home that this smoothie recipe is DELICIOUS. The true test to prove this? My 3 and 5 year old AND my husband all love it.

What are some other benefits?

  1. Blood sugar balance- This one hits home for me because I’m a blood sugar balancing girly, but this smoothie is the perfect balance of fiber, nutrients and protein. Keeping your blood sugar balanced and keeping you feeling great.
  2. Keeps you full & Curbs cravings- Like I said earlier, this smoothie is extremely filling and satiating. I would never recommend full on replacing a meal, but this is a great place filler in between meals when you’re starting to crave something that might not make you feel great.
  3. Supports Gut Health- It’s packed with fiber, digestive enzymes and natural probiotics, keeping your gut healthy and happy and subsequently you happy and healthy!
  4. Beautiful Skin Benefits- As an Esthetician I always have to point this out. Great skin starts from the inside out and one of the best ways to support that is with eating whole foods that benefit you, just like the ones in this smoothie!

Boost your smoothie with Add-In’s:

The thing I love about this recipe that while delicious, it has a pretty neutral flavor profile so it’s really easy to add things in and boost your benefits. Some things I recommend are:

  • A good collagen powder- I wrote a whole post that talks about the benefits of eating foods that help boost natural collagen production, and while I always recommend whole foods over supplements I also always recommend making your life easy where you can. I know there’s a lot of good collagen supplements out there that I probably need to explore, but I still use the Vital Proteins one and love it in my smoothies. It’s flavorless so you don’t even notice it. If you don’t mind some flavor, I also enjoy this Primal Kitchen Collagen powder.
  • Protein Powder- Habit stacking at its best, if you really want to have your smoothie fill you up a protein powder is perfect for that. Add whatever flavor you want, but I recommend a vanilla flavor to go with this particular smoothie. I personally love the Earth fed muscle protein powder
  • Chia Seeds- These tiny little powerhouses are amazing add in’s. They’re rich in omega’s, fiber, protein and antioxidants! This recipe makes about 2 smoothies so I’ll add chia seeds to one and drink it immediately and then add them to the second one to drink later and it basically becomes a chia seed smoothie pudding and it’s delicious and has amazing health benefits.
  • Soaked Nuts- Soaked nuts are an amazing way to add more protein and nutrients to your smoothie. I personally suggest cashews or almonds (mostly cashews) because they go well with the flavor profile of the recipe. Why soaked? You definitely don’t have to soak the nuts. However, it does allow for better absorption of the nutrients and it helps keep your smoothie nice and creamy. To soak them: soak them over night or 4-6 hours in filtered water and then strain. If you’re in a pinch: soak them in hot water for 30 minutes and then strain them.

Ingredients:

I hand picked all of these ingredients because of the benefits they bring to the table as well as how they blend together to make an amazing tasting beverage. Let’s break down what they are and how to make the best of your smoothie!

  • Organic Spinach- if you don’t have or use organic, no biggie! Just make sure it’s thoroughly washed ahead of time. I use this veggie wash and love it. Spinach is a big part of the “detox” part of the smoothie. Any leafy green is an amazing detoxifier, but I picked spinach because it has a pretty neutral taste as far as how it blends with vegetables. You can also substitute for kale, it just has a little more of an intense flavor.
  • Frozen Riced Cauliflower- This is an ingredient I’m especially proud of. Cauliflower is a great detoxifier as well as hearty and filling. The best part? You can’t taste it in the smoothie at all! Hidden Veggies!
  • Frozen Pineapple- Okay, it doesn’t have to be frozen. But having it frozen means its easy to have on hand and makes your smoothie cold and refreshing. The pineapple helps add some sweetness to the smoothie while it’s also filled with enzymes to help with digestion which helps with detoxifying.
  • Frozen Blueberries- Same thing as the pineapple, you can use fresh or frozen. Blueberries help add a wonderful sweetness to the smoothie while also being packed full of anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants help protect your cells while your body is detoxing.
  • Banana- Full of potassium and fiber!
  • Greek Yoghurt- The recipe actually calls for vanilla greek yoghurt but you can use that or plain, it just depends on how sweet you like your smoothies. Even with the vanilla greek yoghurt, the smoothie isn’t too sweet though, it’s the perfect balance. Greek yoghurt is packed full of protein and probiotics, helping you stay full and digest better.
  • Milk or Liquid of your choice- Use whatever variation of milk or water suits you, personally I prefer coconut milk or Organic A2 milk added to my smoothie, it’s just a personal preference.

Meal Prep Ideas:

If you’re familiar with my blog at all you know I love making things in bulk and freezing for later. How I still have freezer room left to do this is beyond me. Smoothies are something I love making ahead of time though! Here’s some of the ways I recommend doing it:

  • Freeze in Mason jars- If you explore my blog this will not come as a shock, as I use mason jars for virtually everything. I love filling up a mason jar with a smoothie and sticking it directly in the freezer and then either the night before a busy day or the morning of, I’ll pull it out and put it on the counter or in the fridge to thaw.
  • Freeze in Cubes- This might dilute it a little bit but I’ll also freeze the smoothie into cubes using trays like these. Then I just pop the cubes into my blender, add a little liquid and then boom! Born again smoothie.
  • DIY “daily harvest” cups- This is basically putting all your ingredients besides your liquid into some sort of jar or cup (you already know I love a mason jar) so that it’s ready to throw into your blender and turn into a smoothie. The only thing I want to make note of here is that you should use frozen spinach to put this together instead of blanching your spinach ahead of time. Make your life easier!
