If you’re familiar with my blog, it’s no secret that I’ve struggled with high cortisol and it’s negatively impacted my health in a big way. While on my cortisol journey I discovered adrenal cocktails and since then I’ve seen their popularity rise immensely!
Why are people so obsessed with adrenal cocktails?
Cortisol is a big topic of conversation right now, a lot of people are realizing they have health problems because they’re suffering from it including (but not limited to): weight gain, acne/skin issues, fatigue, etc. And honestly in this day and age where life seems to get more and more demanding and it’s getting harder and harder to keep up, it’s no wonder so many people are suffering from high cortisol and adrenal fatigue!
I dive into cortisol issues and what could cause them in this post, but lets focus on how adrenal cocktails go hand in hand with it:
Adrenal cocktails don’t directly affect your cortisol, however it does help balance your body’s natural production of cortisol by:
- Giving your body mineral replenishment which helps reduce stress on the body
- Hydrating you which helps with balanced hormones. Balanced hormones = more balanced cortisol levels
- Assisting in level blood sugar which helps with steady energy. Blood sugar spikes lead to fatigue as well as stress on the body
- Your adrenals using a lot Vitamin C to produce cortisol and hormones
So while an adrenal cocktail won’t directly reduce your cortisol it will give your adrenal system the boost it needs for you to feel more balanced, and anyone that has dealt with cortisol knows how off balance you can feel.
Besides cortisol, how can adrenal cocktails benefit you?
Like I said, cortisol is a hot topic right now and I love that adrenal cocktails can go hand in hand with improving cortisol issues. However, they help with so much more! They also benefit you by nourishing your adrenal glands which:
- Regulate your body’s stress response
- Regulates your blood pressure
- Improves your energy levels
- Balances your body’s electrolytes
Give me an adrenal cocktail with a side of skin benefits, Please!
I’ve been making adrenal cocktails for a year or two now and not are they delicious and hydrating, they’re also pretty easy to throw together. I would just keep some organic coconut water on hand, mineral salt and some sort of citrus on hand and throw it together a couple times a week.
It wasn’t until recently that I was making one and thought, “how else can I make this drink benefit me?”. Lauren Bosstick honestly inspired me because she’s always trying to habit stack, so essentially I started dreaming up ways to habit stack this particular drink. Obviously, I landed on adding to it ingredients that would also give my skin a healthy, hydrated glow!
How do Pineapple and Cucumber make your skin glow?
Pineapple and cucumber are actually two of my favorite fruits and veggies to add to my diet for healthy skin, and here’s why:
Pineapple:
- High in Vitamin C! Which helps with your adrenal system like we touched on but it also helps with collagen production, see this post for more info on foods that boost collagen. Collagen is what keeps your skin plump and healthy, so yes please
- It’s anti-inflammatory! Pineapple contains Bromelain which is an enzyme that helps fight off inflammation in the body. Less inflammation helps with a lot of things, like aches and pains, but it also really helps with skin issues such as rosacea, eczema and acne
- Super hydrating! It’s high water content and enzymes keep your body hydrated therefore your skin hydrated and glowy. It’s one of the fruits us estheticians mean when we tell you to “eat your water”
- Improves digestion! The bromelain enzyme helps improve digestion as well and as we know, healthy gut = healthy skin
Caution: eating too much pineapple can cause irritation because of the acidic and enzymatic nature of it, don’t go overboard.
Cucumber:
- Deeply hydrating! Cucumbers are 96% water, so epitome of “eating your water” again. Gives you super hydrated, plump skin
- Anti-inflammatory properties! Cucumbers are super cooling inside and out so they help with inflammation in the body just like pineapple, but through cooling instead of an enzyme. So they help with inflammatory skin issues like acne, rosacea and eczema as well.
- Rich in anti-oxidants! Anti-oxidants help fight off free radical damage. Free Radical damage is a lead cause of aging, so anti-aging benefits!
- Gut happy food! Cucumbers are a mild detoxify-er and contain fiber which help with healthy gut balance and like we said with pineapple, happy gut = happy skin
So cucumber and pineapple are just two of some amazing skin powerhouses, but they’re light enough and pair with citrus well enough that adding them into an adrenal cocktail is delicious and refreshing!
Notes on the Recipe
- I make my juices/adrenal cocktails by cutting up my fresh fruit and putting it in my blender with the coconut water and blending it all until it’s liquid. I then strain it through a mesh strainer like this one into a large pitcher. I prefer this method because I don’t enjoy using a juicer and the clean up it takes. However, if you want to use a juicer go for it! Whatever is best for you. I would recommend juicing the amount of lemon, cucumber, and pineapple the recipe calls for and then mixing it directly with the coconut water and salt
- I try to go as organic as possible, but like I always say, do whatever is best for you and your situation. Non-organic is more cost effective and if it’s more readily available then make your life easy!
- I like to make big batches and freeze extra in either ice cube trays or souper cubes to make my life easier on days that I’m busy and don’t have time to make it fresh but need the adrenal support and skin benefits. If i know i’m having a busy day, I’ll pop some of the frozen cubes out and put them in a mason jar on the counter in the morning and they’re usually melted and ready to go by the afternoon which is usually when I need them
- This Recipe makes about 2-3 adrenal cocktails depending on the size of drink you want
- Lemon seeds and cucumber seeds should come out when you strain the juice, so don’t worry about them too much
